Centre of Care for Traditional Folk Culture of Zlín Region

The Centre of Care for Traditional Folk Culture of Zlín Region is a specialized workplace of the ethnography department of Slovácké Museum in Uherské Hradiště. It was established on the grounds of the government´s resolution of 11 June 2003 under the title Concept of Improved Care for Traditional Folk Culture. This resolution underlines the government´s concern about the preservation of traditional tangible and intangible heritage of the Czech Republic created for centuries by our predecessors. The set of measures to preserve traditional folk culture specifies special steps aiming at deeper identification and systematic documentation, protection, presentation and preservation for future generations.

Selected regional institutions in individual regions were charged with the tasks ensuing from the government´s resolution and the national guarantor was the National Institute of Folk Culture in Strážnice. In Zlín Region the guarantor was Slovácké Museum in Uherské Hradiště where in this context was set up the Centre of Care for Traditional Folk Culture. The professional orientation of this workplace follows the tasks and ideas of the Concept of Improved Care for Traditional Folk Culture and collaborates with its partner institutions – South-East Moravia Museum in Zlín, Valašské Museum in Vsetín and Kroměřížské Museum in Kroměříž providing them with methodical aid on research in the fields of their concern. The Centre of Care for Traditional Folk Culture also coordinates its activities with the National Institute of Folk Culture in Strážnice and Valašské Open Air Museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm. In Slovácké Museum originated the first workplace of its kind in the Czech Republic which serves as a guide for other institutions as concerns methods and system of work in carrying out the government´s task.

The workplace set traditional handiwork in Zlín region its research priority. Based on its experience and knowledge acquired through the systematic, long-time, documentary, collecting and research activity, Slovácké Museum is well aware of the importance of monitoring and preserving traditional manufacture technologies which are increasingly endangered in today´s over-industrialized world. The same emphasis is put on the presentation of traditional folk handicraft and its authors.
