Vladimír Bouček Prize

Since 2005, the town of Uherské Hradiště has been awarding a Vladimír Bouček Prize for the preservation and development of folk handicraft as a form of public recognition of handicraft masters in the region. In line with the improved care for traditional folk culture approved of by the government in 2003 and with the local traditions, the town of Uherské Hradiště has decided to award outstanding handicraft masters a prize named after Ing. arch. Vladimír Bouček, a founder of modern forms of care for traditional folk handicraft and a distinguished and respectable personality of Uherské Hradiště. The significance of this act goes beyond the borders of the town. Both professional and non-professional public have a chance to suggest candidates one of whom is recommended for the award by the professional committee to the Council of Uherské Hradiště. In 2005 the prize was given to František Mikulec, a folk costume maker of Uherské Hradiště who is the author of an imposing number of folk costumes and their components from various parts of Slovácko. His work is renowned also outside the region because during his career in the Slovač cooperative he would supply folk ensembles from all Czechoslovakia with their folk costume outfit. In 2006 was awarded Františka Snopková, trained in the workshops of the Centre of Folk Handicraft that continually comes up with new compositions of tiny figures made of dry maize leaves. Her work is well-known not only here but also abroad. The 2007 nominee was Hana Špalková, whose nomination was approved in April and the award was handed over during the July Svatojánský Fair in Uherské Hradiště her domain being basketry, i.e. artistic weaving baskets. She uses green willow twigs from her own willow trees, and pedig, a part of reed, then red withe and narrow strips of twigs called „šén“. She makes use of traditional technology and her products can be seen in various fairs both home and abroad, mostly in Slovakia. For two days artists were displaying their interesting craft along with the above mentioned Prize winners at a representative fair on the gallery courtyard.
